Nikkei Falls 1% as Stronger Yen Weighs on Markets

Doha: Japan's Nikkei share average fell about 1% on Monday, retreating from a one-week high as a sharp rise in the yen weighed on equities following coordinated intervention by Tokyo and Washington to support the Japanese currency late last week. The Nikkei 225 ended down about 1% at 63,754.90, while the broader Topix index fell 1.1% to 3,960.03.

According to Qatar News Agency, most Nikkei stocks closed lower, with 169 falling and 52 advancing. The intervention aimed to stabilize the yen resulted in increased pressure on Japan's stock market, affecting investor sentiment and leading to a decline in share prices across various sectors. The coordinated effort by Tokyo and Washington highlights the ongoing concerns over currency stability in the region.
