Warsaw: Voters in Poland headed to the polls on Sunday to cast their ballots in a crucial runoff of the presidential election which could reshape the country’s relationship with the European Union (EU). Some 29 million Polish voters were called to the polls to elect a new president in a close race between liberal Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, who supports strengthening ties with the EU, and conservative historian Karol Nawrocki, backed by the right-wing Law and Justice party.
According to Qatar News Agency, this election round follows a fiercely contested first round on May 18, in which Trzaskowski received more than 31% of the vote, while Nawrocki received nearly 30%, ahead of 11 other candidates. With the end of conservative President Andrzej Duda’s second term, the president-elect is expected to have a significant impact on the ability of the government of centrist Prime Minister Donald Tusk to implement its agenda, given the constitutional powers that allow the president to veto laws.
