Qatar and Democratic Republic of Congo Forge Stronger Ties with Bilateral Talks

Doha: In the context of strengthening the growing relations between the State of Qatar and the Democratic Republic of Congo and enhancing them to broader horizons, HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani will mark his first visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo. His Highness is scheduled to hold talks with HE President of the Democratic Republic of Congo Felix Tshisekedi concerning bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to support and develop them in various fields, in addition to reviewing several regional and international issues of common interest.

According to Qatar News Agency, the visit of HH the Amir to the Democratic Republic of Congo is expected to contribute to strengthening joint cooperation in multiple fields, discovering more trade and investment opportunities between the two countries, supporting bilateral relations and pushing them to broader horizons and opening new areas for them in a way that serves the common interests and aspirations of the two countries and their friendly peoples.

Relations between the State of Qatar and the Democratic Republic of Congo have been on a path of growth, as Doha works to strengthen its diplomatic and economic presence in sub-Saharan Africa. Kinshasa views Qatari partnerships as a window to promote development, infrastructure, and investment in its abundant natural resources. This relationship has seen significant development in recent years, with the launch of several joint investment projects, the exchange of high-level visits, and agreements to enhance cooperation in energy, health, mining, and other sectors.

The formal diplomatic relations between Qatar and the Democratic Republic of Congo were established on November 6, 2019, at the United Nations headquarters. Both nations expressed a strong desire to strengthen and develop relations in political, economic, trade, and cultural fields, emphasizing the importance of bilateral cooperation aligned with the principles of the United Nations Charter.

The two countries have been active in international forums, focusing on stability in the Great Lakes region, joint coordination in the UN and the African Union, and the exchange of diplomatic mediation experiences. Qatar's role in supporting development and its diplomatic approach based on dialogue and economic partnership have been well-regarded in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a notable achievement, the State of Qatar announced the signing of the Doha Framework Agreement for Peace between the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Congo River Alliance. This agreement underscores a commitment to resolving conflict through dialogue and confidence-building measures, emphasizing civilian protection, human rights, and national reconciliation.

The relationship between Qatar and the Democratic Republic of Congo is poised for further strengthening, with a focus on exploring trade and investment opportunities and enhancing cooperation to serve common interests. Agricultural cooperation, investment in rare metals, and development projects are key areas of interest, with Qatar contributing to infrastructure and health sector improvements in Congo.

Qatar Airways' recent launch of flights to Kinshasa is another step in enhancing connectivity, enabling travelers to access destinations across Asia, Europe, and beyond via Hamad International Airport.
