Qatar Calls for Fair Application of International Law at UN

Doha:The State of Qatar has emphasized the need for the consistent application of international law, urging that it be applied without selectivity or double standards. The credibility of the international legal system, Qatar argues, hinges on the uniform enforcement of its rules.

According to Qatar News Agency, Abdulaziz Al Sulaiti, Second Secretary at Qatar's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, delivered these remarks at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly's Sixth Committee. Al Sulaiti stressed that adherence to the rule of law is not merely a goal outlined in the UN Charter but a firm commitment within its purposes and principles.

The Sixth Committee discussions focused on the rule of law at both national and international levels, under agenda item 84. Qatar highlighted the interconnection between these levels, noting that each reinforces the other. Additionally, Qatar emphasized the importance of dialogue between the Sixth Committee and the International Law Commission to ensure the commission's work aligns with governmental practices and perspectives from various regions.

On the national front, Qatar referred to the Ministry of Justice's strategic plan for 2025-2030, aligned with the Third National Development Strategy. This plan aims to develop an efficient justice system promoting transparency and integrity. Al Sulaiti noted Qatar's efforts to strengthen institutions according to international standards, align national legislation with international treaties, and expand legal awareness programs to educate the public on rights and responsibilities.

Qatar also underscored its regional and international contributions to advancing the rule of law, mentioning its leadership of the Arab Permanent Committee on International Humanitarian Law, under the League of Arab States. Qatar became the committee's first chair in 2025. Furthermore, Qatar will host the 11th Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption in December 2025.

Regarding regional security, Qatar condemned Iranian attacks on its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and waters since February 28, as well as similar violations against other Arab states. These actions were described as breaches of international law, humanitarian law, and the UN Charter. Qatar called for adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), particularly concerning navigational rights and freedoms along critical maritime routes.

Qatar's priority is to de-escalate tensions and create space for diplomatic resolutions. It plans to continue working with partners to bridge differences, build common ground, and seek peaceful solutions that ensure regional security and stability.

The statement also denounced Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including those targeting a power distribution station in Medina, following an attack on Mecca, and other attempts to target civilians and infrastructure in Riyadh. Al Sulaiti reiterated Qatar's full solidarity with Saudi Arabia.
