Qatar Clinches Gold in Mixed Trap Event at Asian Shotgun Championships

Doha: The Qatari national team triumphed in the mixed team trap event, securing a gold medal and setting both Asian and world records on Wednesday at the conclusion of the Asian Shotgun Championships Doha 2026 hosted at the Lusail Shooting Complex over 11 days.

According to Qatar News Agency, the championship featured 196 shooters from 17 countries, competing in various categories, including skeet and trap events across men's and women's individual and pairs, junior, and mixed team events. The final day of competition witnessed an intense battle in the mixed team trap event, where Qatar's Mohammed Al Rumaihi and Kholoud Al Khalaf emerged victorious, scoring 30 out of 40 targets. This exceptional performance led to a new Asian and world record.

The Kuwaiti team, represented by Talal Al Rashidi and Sarah Al Hawal, secured the silver medal with a score of 20 out of 40 targets, while the Chinese Taipei team, composed of Kai Pang-chan and Lin Yu-hsin, took home the bronze with 19 out of 40 targets. These results contributed to Qatar's overall medal tally in the championship, which now stands at eight medals: four gold and four silver, across skeet and trap categories.

In the skeet competition, Qatar achieved remarkable success with Mutaib Al Marri setting a new record in the junior individual event and the men's team, consisting of Rashid Saleh Al Athba, Mohammed Ahmed Al Kuwari, and Ali Ahmed Al Ishaq, winning gold. Additionally, the mixed team of Rashid Saleh Al-Athba and Reem Al-Sharshani also claimed gold, while three silver medals were secured in various categories.

For the trap shooting events, the Qatari team comprising Saeed Abu Sharib, Mohammed Al Rumaihi, and Angelo Scalzone won silver in the men's team event. The success continued with the gold medal win in the mixed team event by Al-Rumaihi and Al-Khalaf.

At the awards ceremony, HE Sheikh Khalifa bin Khalid bin Ahmed bin Abdullah Al-Thani, Director of the Sports Sector at the Qatar Olympic Committee, and Jassim Shaheen Al Sulaiti, Secretary General of the Qatar Shooting and Archery Federation, honored the top performers. HE Sheikh Khalifa praised the Qatari team's achievements and expressed optimism for future competitions, including the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya and the upcoming World Championships in Qatar, which will offer Olympic qualification spots.

Jassim Al-Sulaiti expressed his satisfaction with the Qatari shooters' accomplishments, viewing them as a strong start to a promising season. He emphasized the federation's readiness for future events, including the HH The Amir's Grand Prix Shotgun Championship next month, which is set to feature over 300 international shooters.

Qatari shooter Mohammed Al Rumaihi, who played a crucial role in the gold medal win, conveyed his pride in the team's achievements. He attributed their success to rigorous training and collective effort, highlighting the competitive nature of the championship with participation from elite Asian shooters.
