Qatar Museums to Premiere New Musical Linking South Africa and Palestine

Doha:The Abdul Aziz Nasser Theatre in Souq Waqif will host the world premiere of "Again," a new musical theatre production exploring the historical struggles for freedom in South Africa and Palestine, from October 27 to 31, 2026. This significant production is the result of a collaboration between South Africa's Isango Ensemble and Palestinian writer Sondos Sabra, commissioned by Qatar Museums.

According to Qatar News Agency, the production, based on an idea by writer and historian Tariq Ali, features South African performers and Palestinian testimonies, bringing together these distinct histories through music, movement, and spoken word. It is presented in association with Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art, aiming to foster dialogue and cultural conversations through live performance.

Directed by Isango Ensemble's Artistic Director Mark Dornford-May, alongside Associate Director Max Roberts and choreographer Lungelo Ngamlana, "Again" marks Isango Ensemble's first performance in the Gulf region. The show combines newly composed music and choral performance with Sabra's writings, including selections from her diaries published in "Voices of Resistance Diaries of Genocide."

Zeina Arida, Director of Mathaf, expressed enthusiasm for hosting the production, highlighting its importance in bringing South African and Palestinian experiences to the forefront. The production, featuring a 15-member ensemble from South Africa and the UK, aims to create a powerful and immediate connection to the themes of resistance and liberation.

Tariq Ali praised the collaboration, noting the significance of intertwining the histories of South Africa and Palestine on stage. The project, developed over two years across multiple regions, underscores Qatar Museums' commitment to supporting cultural projects that amplify underrepresented voices and foster global connections. The performance is part of Qatar Creates Fall/Winter 2026-27 season and Evolution Nation, celebrating Qatar's cultural journey over the past 50 years.
