Qatar National Team Coach Reflects on Zimbabwe Friendly as Strategic Preparation

Doha: Julen Lopetegui, coach of the Qatari national football team, emphasized the strategic value of the recent friendly match against Zimbabwe, despite the team's loss. He highlighted its significance in preparing for future challenges, particularly the upcoming FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 scheduled for December. According to Qatar News Agency, Lopetegui acknowledged the team's disappointment with the result, while underscoring that it represents just a small segment of their broader journey. He articulated the importance of rotating players to assess their capabilities, especially focusing on the integration of new talent into the team dynamics. Lopetegui expressed a deliberate choice to engage in only one international friendly this month. He detailed plans for the team's continued preparations, which will follow the conclusion of the tenth round of the Qatar Stars League (Doha Bank Stars League). This strategy includes reintegrating players from Al Sadd, Al Duhail, and Al Gharafa, who are participating in the AFC Champions League Elite. The coach reiterated the team's ambition to make a significant impact in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 next month. He concluded his remarks to QNA by affirming his commitment to devising a comprehensive plan to optimally prepare the team for upcoming matches. Having assumed his role last May, Lopetegui managed his first match in June 2025 against Iran. He subsequently guided the team to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026, achieving a draw with Oman and a victory over the United Arab Emirates.
