Doha: The Qatari national tennis team has successfully advanced to the semifinals of the Asia/Oceania Group IV Davis Cup tournament, currently taking place in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
According to Qatar News Agency, Qatar secured its place in the semifinals after finishing second in Group B with a 1-1 record. The team initially faced a setback, losing their opening tie 2-1 to the host nation, Sri Lanka. However, they quickly recovered with a 2-1 victory over the Northern Mariana Islands.
The Qatari squad, which includes brothers Mousa and Mubarak Shanan along with Jabor Al Mutawa, is set to compete against Kyrgyzstan in the semifinals on Saturday. A victory in this match would guarantee them a spot in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group III.
In preparation for the tournament, the team underwent an intensive two-week training camp in Thailand. Following their latest victory, player Jabor Al-Mutawa emphasized the significance of the upcoming match, underscoring the team's focus on securing the win and achieving promotion to Group III.
The tournament format consists of a single round-robin first round, with the top two teams from each group advancing to a crossover semifinal. In this stage, the winners of each group face the runners-up of the opposite group, with both semifinal victors earning promotion to the higher group.
