Qatar-US Energy Partnership Strengthens Global Market Stability

Doha: Two experts have highlighted the strategic nature of the Qatar-US energy partnership, emphasizing its crucial role in enhancing stability within the global energy market.

According to Qatar News Agency, oil and gas expert and former CEO of Qatar Chemical Company, Eng. Nasser Jeham Al Kuwari, described the relationship between Qatar and the United States in the energy sector as a strategic alliance, particularly in the fields of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and petrochemicals.

Al Kuwari stated that the energy ties between Qatar and the US have been deeply rooted for decades, forming a stable strategic alliance, especially in LNG and petrochemicals. He highlighted that this cooperation has elevated Qatar's status as a global energy leader while simultaneously supporting US energy security. The collaboration dates back to the early 1990s, when ExxonMobil partnered with QatarEnergy to develop the North Field, the world's largest non-associated gas field, leading to the establishment of a sophisticated LNG infrastructure and positioning Qatar as a top LNG exporter globally.

The partnership has also extended into the petrochemical sector. In 2001, Chevron Phillips Chemical became a major partner in Qatar Chemical Company, holding a 49 percent stake. The Q-Chem complex in Mesaieed began operations in 2003, followed by Q-Chem II in 2005. A major petrochemical project launched in 2019 on the US Gulf Coast by QatarEnergy and Chevron Phillips Chemical, with an investment of $8 billion, demonstrates the depth of mutual investment and industrial integration.

Recent joint initiatives include the 2024 launch of a massive petrochemical complex in Ras Laffan Industrial City by QatarEnergy and Chevron Phillips Chemical. This facility is expected to significantly boost Qatar's petrochemical production capacity by 2026. Al Kuwari further underscored the significance of the Golden Pass project in Sabine Pass, Texas, a joint venture between QatarEnergy and ExxonMobil, which aims to increase LNG liquefaction and export capacity.

Al Kuwari affirmed that these projects embody the strategic nature of Qatar-US energy relations, reflecting the depth of cooperation between the two countries. The partnership serves as a model of international cooperation, bolstering global energy security, supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources, and contributing to economic stability.
