Doha: The Qatar men's national volleyball team is set to wrap up an intensive series of friendly matches with a third encounter against Ukraine this Sunday. This match marks the final stage of their domestic training camp in Doha, as the team prepares for their historic second participation in the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship, scheduled to take place in the Philippines from September 12 to 28, 2025.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Qatari team has already engaged in six friendlies during the camp. These include a prior match against Ukraine last Friday, as well as two competitive fixtures each against Egypt and Iran. The coaching staff, led by Argentine coach Camilo Andres Soto, has emphasized the importance of these games, utilizing all players in various positions and focusing on diverse playing strategies. The strategies include fast balls through the middle, breakthroughs from the flanks, and enhancements in reception and defense, areas identified as needing further development.
The friendly matches are particularly significant due to the challenging nature of Qatar's group in the World Championship. The draw has placed Qatar in Pool B, alongside world No. 1 and defending champion Poland, the Netherlands, and Romania, a group considered one of the toughest in the tournament. Qatar's journey in the championship will commence on September 13 against the Netherlands, followed by a match against Poland on September 15, and concluding the first round with a game against Romania on September 17.
Adding to their challenges, Qatari player Rahimi recently underwent knee surgery on Saturday. This unfortunate development will prevent him from participating in the World Championship, posing an additional challenge for the coaching staff as they work to redistribute roles among the players.
