Doha: Qatari newspapers have lauded the recent speech delivered by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani during the opening session of the 80th United Nations General Assembly.
According to Qatar News Agency, the editorial pieces emphasized the speech’s embodiment of the aspirations of free nations committed to international law and its strong condemnation of Israel’s actions.
Al-Raya newspaper, in an editorial by its Editor-in-Chief, highlighted HH the Amir’s call for restoring the effectiveness of UN international legitimacy. The paper underscored the Amir’s assertion that the fallback of the international order in favor of power dynamics paves the way for the law of the jungle, a notion Israel seeks to impose. The newspaper detailed HH the Amir’s remarks on the Israeli escalation and lack of accountability, particularly referencing Israel’s bombing of a Hamas negotiating delegation meeting in Doha, which resulted in six casualties, including a Qatari citizen. This attack was perceived as an attempt to derail ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and undermine Qatar’s mediation efforts.
The editorial further outlined HH the Amir’s elucidation of Israel’s undisguised objectives to dominate its Arab surroundings, labeling opposition as either terrorism or anti-Semitism. It condemned the ongoing military actions in Gaza since October 7, 2023, which have resulted in over 65,000 deaths and widespread destruction. The piece concluded by affirming HH the Amir’s comprehensive vision for global peace, a roadmap for restoring UN legitimacy, and a perspective on the challenges faced by Arab states striving for stability amidst divisions.
Al-Arab echoed these sentiments, describing HH the Amir’s speech as reflective of a deep strategic vision placing Doha at the center of UN discussions on peace and sustainable development. The newspaper’s Editor-in-Chief noted the speech’s comprehensive nature, addressing moral, political, and humanitarian dimensions. HH the Amir’s comments about the treacherous attack targeting the Hamas delegation aimed to reveal Israel’s expanded aggression beyond Palestinian targets to mediating states like Qatar.
The editorial stressed that despite challenges and obstruction attempts, Qatar remains committed to mediation. HH the Amir reaffirmed the enduring significance of the Palestinian issue and advocated for justice through ending occupation. The article also highlighted support for Arab and Muslim communities in Syria, Lebanon, and Sudan, offering a balanced vision for global crisis resolution.
The Peninsula focused on HH the Amir’s remarks on Israeli aggression against Qatar as a severe violation of state sovereignty and international norms. The newspaper reported that HH the Amir branded the attack as state terrorism aimed at derailing peace efforts. Moreover, it highlighted Qatar’s ongoing commitment to mediation, citing successes in collaboration with Egypt and the United States for hostage releases and truces, despite obstacles.
Beyond regional issues, HH the Amir underscored Qatar’s active role in peace initiatives in Ukraine, Africa, and support for transitions in Syria, Lebanon, and Sudan. The editorial concluded by mentioning Qatar’s hosting of the Second World Summit for Social Development in 2025 and its bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, positioning Doha as a hub for dialogue and peace.
