Geneva: HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva Dr. Hend Abdulrahman Al Muftah affirmed that Qatar's role in mediation is a well-established component of its foreign policy, focused on dialogue and peaceful solutions. This approach is anchored in promoting international peace and security as fundamental elements of Qatar's foreign policy.
According to Qatar News Agency, HE Al Muftah emphasized that Qatar, led by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, has developed a reputation as a trusted mediator on the global stage. By leveraging its diplomatic expertise, Qatar has expanded its efforts in mediation, working with strategic patience and maintaining open channels of communication even in complex crises.
HE Al Muftah noted that Qatar's mediation efforts are driven by a sense of moral responsibility rather than media visibility. The focus remains on contributing effectively to reducing tensions and facilitating political solutions, while allowing the parties directly involved to decide the outcomes of the mediation process.
The relationship between Qatar and the United Nations has evolved over the past two decades from a traditional member relationship to a strategic partnership. Qatar's contributions to the UN include supporting initiatives, participating in peace efforts, and addressing global challenges. Notably, in 2018, Qatar provided USD 500 million to finance UN organizations, underscoring its commitment to international peace and security.
HE Al Muftah highlighted the increased institutional presence of the UN in Doha, marked by the opening of the UN House, which consolidates various UN entities and enhances joint cooperation. In the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Qatar has led significant resolutions, such as those empowering women and protecting human rights in conflict situations, demonstrating its active engagement in multilateral efforts.
The partnership between Qatar and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has also strengthened, with Qatar contributing over USD 440 million to support refugee programs. This collaboration includes Qatari NGOs and reflects Qatar's commitment to humanitarian objectives.
HE Al Muftah concluded that Qatar's approach to mediation involves building trust and maintaining dialogue, contributing to sustainable solutions. Qatar's partnership with the UN combines diplomatic expertise with humanitarian capabilities, aiming for integrated responses to global crises.
