New York: QFFD and GiveDirectly have signed a USD 5 million grant agreement to assist families living in extreme poverty in Rwanda. The agreement, announced at the ECOSOC Partnership Forum, aims to support 3,979 families in the Nyagisozi sector over one year through cash grants, as part of the “Habwa Wigire” program.
According to Qatar News Agency, the initiative will distribute cash grants of up to USD 1,100 per family. The program is executed in collaboration with Rwanda’s Ministry of Local Government and seeks to create a model for poverty alleviation that can be applied both in Rwanda and globally. Fahad Al Sulaiti, Director General of the Qatar Fund for Development, emphasized the commitment to improving livelihoods and creating stability for Rwanda’s vulnerable families.
Nick Allardice, President and CEO of GiveDirectly, expressed appreciation for the support and highlighted the effectiveness of unconditional cash transfers in empowering individuals. Ambassador Ernest Rwamucyo, Rwanda’s Permanent Representative to the UN, noted the partnership’s potential for significant impact and future cooperation between Rwanda and Qatar.
Despite Rwanda’s economic growth, challenges remain in reducing poverty. Currently, 38.2 percent of the population lives below the international poverty line, with 34 percent facing food insecurity due to climate challenges. The agreement aligns with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 plan, focusing on eradicating poverty and bolstering the agricultural economy, which is crucial for the majority of the rural population.
This partnership marks a significant step towards sustainable development in Rwanda and demonstrates the commitment of the Qatar Fund for Development and its partners to support vulnerable groups.
