Residents Ordered Indoors as Large Chemical Fire Erupts in US State of Indiana

Newburgh: A large chemical fire erupted Saturday afternoon in the town of Newburgh in the US State of Indiana, prompting authorities to issue emergency shelter-in-place orders for residents due to the potential dangers posed by hazardous materials. Videos shared on social media showed flames and heavy white smoke billowing from the site.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Ohio Township Fire Department reported that the blaze broke out on Vann Road, between Weathers Road and Anderson Road, with multiple fire crews from surrounding departments joining the response. Officials confirmed that the incident involved chemicals, warning that nearby residents must remain indoors, close windows and doors, and avoid the area to allow emergency teams to work safely.

In updated guidance, authorities expanded the shelter-in-place advisory to include major roads such as Lincoln Avenue, Sharon Road, and Ferstal Road, as well as areas extending from State Route 66 to the riverfront east of Anderson Road. The Warrick County Sheriff’s Office also urged residents not to operate drones over the fire zone, stressing that such activity endangers first responders and hampers firefighting efforts.

As of late Saturday, crews were still battling the blaze. No injuries were reported, but officials have not disclosed details about the chemicals involved, prompting concern among residents who took to social media questioning the risks to their health and safety.
