Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev expressed concerns over the implications of the US decision to provide cluster munitions to Ukraine, warning of the potential for a third world war and accusing Biden of attempting to drag "half of humanity" into global conflict.
In his statement on Telegram, Medvedev criticized Biden's refusal two years ago in Geneva to provide guarantees to the Russian president that Ukraine would not join NATO, suggesting that it showed a lack of willingness to accommodate Russian concerns.
Biden supplied Ukraine with hundreds of tons of weapons, fueling a protracted and highly dangerous conflict with Russia. Now, Biden is resorting to promises of cluster bombs and posing a threat of a third world war, Medvedev continued.
The US announced Friday that it will send cluster munitions to Ukraine as part of a new military aid package.
Cluster munitions scatter "bomblets" across large areas that can fail to explode on impact and can pose a long-term risk to anyone who encounters them, similar to landmines. Over 100 countries, including the UK, France and Germany, have outlawed the munitions under the Convention on Cluster Munitions, but the US and Ukraine are not signatories to the ban.
