Doha: The Shura Council convened for the first regular session of its second legislative term, marking the start of its 54th annual session. The meeting took place in Tamim bin Hamad Hall at the Council’s headquarters, chaired by HE Abd Ul-Rahman bin Yousuf Al Khulaifi, the oldest member of the council.
According to Qatar News Agency, HE Al Khulaifi delivered a speech during the session, inaugurated by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. His Excellency emphasized the importance of this term for Qatar’s Shura Council, portraying it as a significant milestone aimed at fulfilling citizens’ aspirations and aligning with the leadership’s vision for a prosperous future. He highlighted recent constitutional amendments that enhance the Shura Council’s role and promote greater public participation in Qatar’s political landscape.
HE Al Khulaifi reiterated the council’s commitment to achieving national prosperity and development through constructive collaboration with the executive authority. He praised the unity and cohesion of the Qatari people, emphasizing the importance of national identity and traditional values as the foundation for Qatar’s stability and progress.
In foreign affairs, HE Al Khulaifi expressed the Shura Council’s support for the state’s foreign policy, particularly its unwavering stance on the Palestinian issue. He commended Qatar’s efforts in mediating a ceasefire in Gaza and reiterated support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Following his address, HE Shura Council Secretary-General Nayef bin Mohammed Al Mahmoud outlined the session’s agenda. The council members took their constitutional oath, and elections were held for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker. HE Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim was elected as Speaker, and HE Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti as Deputy Speaker.
HE Al Ghanim expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, highlighting the collective responsibility to enhance the council’s legislative and oversight functions. He noted that HH the Amir’s speech at the session’s opening underscored the leadership’s commitment to national interests and regional issues, with a strong emphasis on the Palestinian cause. Guided by these directives, the council aims to continue its efforts towards Qatar’s national objectives and the aspirations of its people.
