UN Launches Political Forum on Sustainable Development

New york: The 2025 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development kicked off Monday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Ministers, officials, experts, and civil society actors from around the world participated in the meeting, discussing ways to accelerate action to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development goals, in light of the growing challenges and the approaching deadline for their implementation.

According to Qatar News Agency, the forum, which runs until July 23, is being held under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. It comes at a time when the financial gap required to implement the Sustainable Development Goals remains estimated at approximately USD 4 trillion annually, according to the outcomes of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, recently held in Seville, Spain. This highlights the need to expand global investment and financial reforms.

This year’s forum is being held under the theme: “Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs for leaving no one behind”. This reflects a growing awareness of the urgent need for concrete progress in implementing the UN agenda, especially in light of interconnected global crises such as climate change, widening social gaps, and economic turmoil.

The current session of the forum focuses on discussing specific targets among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to good health and well-being, decent work and economic growth, and life below water. It also focuses on building partnerships to achieve the goals, a goal that is reviewed annually due to its importance in strengthening the means of implementation, particularly with regard to financing.

Voluntary national reviews are also a key component of the forum, where member states submit self-reports reviewing their progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting successes and challenges.

Dozens of countries are expected to submit their reports during the forum, contributing to transparency, the exchange of expertise, and enhanced accountability, while providing civil society with a direct opportunity to engage with decision-makers.

The forum also features the participation of a wide range of non-governmental organizations, including youth organizations, local authorities, indigenous peoples, academic institutions, private companies, and United Nations agencies, embodying the inclusive nature of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The forum’s program includes a series of side events, exhibitions, and panel discussions, aimed at fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and providing practical, evidence-based solutions.

This year’s forum is seen as a critical milestone in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, with just five years to go until the deadline. The forum is expected to lay the groundwork for the upcoming SDG Summit in 2027, which will provide a comprehensive assessment of global progress and outline a roadmap for the final phase toward 2030.
