New york: The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned today's military escalation in the Middle East, saying that the use of force across the region undermines international peace and security.
According to Qatar News Agency, in a statement, Guterres said, "All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the UN." He emphasized that the Charter explicitly prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.
The UN Secretary-General called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation, warning that failure to do so could lead to a broader regional conflict with serious consequences for civilians and regional stability. Guterres urged all parties to return to the negotiating table promptly, stressing that the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law and the UN Charter, is the only viable path. He highlighted that the Charter provides the necessary foundation for maintaining international peace and security.
