In a statement today, Guterres emphasized that these clashes pose a major threat to the civilian population and further complicate the humanitarian situation in the region. He noted that the fighting would worsen the humanitarian situation in El Fasher and the surrounding areas. The UN Secretary General called on all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, protect civilians, ensure their safe passage, and facilitate rapid access to humanitarian assistance. He renewed his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a permanent ceasefire, stressing the need to return to political dialogue as the only solution to reach a peaceful settlement.
