Khartoum: The United Nations has raised alarms regarding the “clear preparations” for renewed fighting in Sudan, particularly in the strategic region of Kordofan. This area lies between the capital, Khartoum, which is under the control of the army, and the Darfur region, dominated by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to Qatar News Agency, Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated there is no sign of de-escalation in the region. Instead, the current situation on the ground suggests preparations for increased military operations, which is expected to exacerbate the plight of the already suffering population.
In a related development, the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced that it has commenced immediate efforts to gather evidence concerning the recent atrocities committed in El Fasher, Darfur. This evidence will be crucial for future prosecutions.
UN estimates indicate that approximately 36,000 civilians have fled El Fasher since last Sunday amid clashes between the RSF and the Sudanese army. These civilians have sought refuge in the city of Tawila, which is already home to around 650,000 displaced individuals.
