UNAMI Mandate in Iraq to End by December 2025

Baghdad: The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has announced that its mandate will come to an end by December 31, 2025, following a request from the Iraqi government.

According to Qatar News Agency, UNAMI spokesperson Samir Ghattas confirmed in a press interview that there are no ongoing discussions about extending the mandate and that a final decision has been reached. Ghattas noted that some staff members who are essential for completing financial and administrative duties will stay in Iraq beyond the mission’s conclusion.

Ghattas further explained that despite the mandate’s end, the 23 UN development agencies currently operating in Iraq will continue their activities in the country. This decision follows a formal request made by the Iraqi government on April 8, 2024, to the UN Secretary-General, asking for the mission to conclude by the specified date.
