US Implements Ban on Specific Canadian Imports

Doha:A US ban on imports of certain Canadian products took effect, further escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa.

According to Qatar News Agency, the measures target specific Canadian dairy products, alcoholic beverages, and motorcycles, particularly those equipped with internal-combustion engines with a cylinder capacity of more than 800 cc.

The White House announced these measures on September 8, shortly after Canada imposed new retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of US goods, including steel, dairy products, and agricultural equipment. The Canadian measures were a response to US duties of 50% on a similar value of Canadian goods, which were imposed after several rounds of trade negotiations broke down.

This latest development deepens the US-Canada trade dispute, with Washington moving beyond tariffs to block selected Canadian products from entering the US market. Canada has described the broader US measures as relatively modest while maintaining retaliatory tariffs on US goods.
