US Lifts Sanctions on Syrian President, Interior Minister Ahead of Trump Meeting

Washington: The US lifted sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed Al Sharaa on Friday, following a similar move by the UN Security Council a day earlier. This development occurs just before Al Sharaa’s scheduled meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House next week.

According to Qatar News Agency, the US Treasury Department announced in a press release that both President Al Sharaa and Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab have been removed from the US sanctions list. This decision aligns with the UN Security Council’s resolution, which was adopted on Thursday. The resolution saw 14 of the 15 Council members vote in favor of lifting the sanctions, with China choosing to abstain.

The US’s decision to lift the sanctions comes amid a broader diplomatic effort to engage with the Syrian leadership. The upcoming meeting between Al Sharaa and President Trump is expected to address various geopolitical and security issues, reflecting the shifting dynamics in international relations.
