Kigali: The World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed an innovative strategy to combat the Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, utilizing anonymized mobile phone data. This initiative is designed to create detailed maps of population movements, aiding in the identification of potential future hotspots for the virus's transmission. According to Qatar News Agency, this approach allows health officials to analyze mobility patterns, which is crucial for monitoring risks in areas that, while geographically distant, are connected through travel links to current disease strongholds. The strategy aims to provide a more accurate understanding of the epidemic's trajectory and potential spread. Efforts to curb the outbreak come amid government reports confirming Ebola cases in six provinces, with 6,250 infections and 3,039 deaths reported since the outbreak was declared on May 15. Olivier le Polain, head of the Epidemiology and Analysis Unit at the WHO's Health Emergencies Program, emphasized the significant role of population movements in the spread of epidemics. In the current wave, understanding these movements is vital for medical teams to assess risks more accurately. The Swedish organization "Flowminder" is responsible for conducting this complex analysis. They utilize aggregated and anonymized records, which are automatically generated as mobile phones connect to various cell towers during the subscribers' travels. This data-driven approach is considered a critical tool in the ongoing efforts to manage and eventually curb the Ebola outbreak in the region.
