Alexandria: The 16th edition of the Alexandria International Theatre Festival commenced today in Alexandria, Egypt. This year's festival is named in honor of Egyptian actor Mohamed Saad and is set to unfold over the course of seven days.
According to Qatar News Agency, the festival showcases 16 international and Arab theatrical productions, including the Qatari play The Shoe Shiner. This production, penned by Khalid Al Jaber and directed by Hafez Khalifa, delves into the life of a humble shoe shiner whose interactions with his clients reveal profound human experiences. The play examines themes such as alienation, brokenness, identity, and belonging through the stories symbolized by different pairs of shoes.
The festival's agenda also features a variety of cultural and artistic activities. Attendees can participate in workshops that cover critical essay writing, scenography, live physical performance, and dramatic singing. Additionally, the festival will recognize several creative individuals who have significantly contributed to the theatre industry.
