GLOBELEQ PARTNERS WITH GOVERNMENT OF EGYPT TO DEVELOP A LARGE-SCALE GREEN HYDROGEN PROJECT

LONDON and CAIRO, Aug. 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Globeleq, the leading independent power company in Africa, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), the General Authority for Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), the Sovereign Fund of Egypt for Investment and Development (TSFE), and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), to jointly develop a large-scale green hydrogen facility within the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

Globeleq - Powering Africa's Growth

Globeleq, as lead developer and investor, will develop, finance, build, own and operate the green hydrogen project.  It will be developed in 3 phases, totalling 3.6 GW of electrolysers and around 9 GW of solar PV and wind power generation.  The first phase will involve a pilot project using a 100 MW electrolyser, and will initially focus on green ammonia fertilisers, while considering other end-uses of green hydrogen in the medium and longer term, including green fuels.  Globeleq intends to enter into long-term off-take agreements with leading and creditworthy Egyptian and international companies, while supporting their decarbonisation plans.

Capitalising on Egypt’s best-in-class wind and solar PV resource, well-developed infrastructures, and the Egyptian Government’s investment-friendly regulatory framework, Globeleq aims to competitively produce hydrogen for exports and the local market.  Egypt’s unique geographical location, at the crossroads of Africa, Europe, and Asia, with about 13% of the global trade flowing through the Suez Canal, puts the country in a position to become a global green energy hub.

Globeleq has been investing in Egypt since 2003 and currently owns the ARC for Renewable Energy S.A.E. 66 MWp solar PV plant located at the Benban Solar Park near Aswan. Globeleq aims to support the country’s ambitious renewables strategy by developing new solar PV, wind, battery energy storage, seawater desalination and green hydrogen projects in Egypt.

The British Ambassador to Egypt, Gareth Bayley OBE, indicated:Globeleq is a leading British investor, 70% owned by British International Investment and 30% Norfund, which are respectively the UK and Norway’s development finance institutions. The company has been investing in Egypt for nearly 20 years and we are delighted with the signing of this MOU, which underscores once again the strong relationship between the UK and Egypt. The project also supports both countries’ leadership and ambitions in renewable energy and combating climate change. We look forward to continue working with Globeleq and all the stakeholders involved.”

The Norwegian Ambassador to Egypt, Hilde Klemetsdal, added: “With Globeleq’s ambitious plans, Norway continues to strengthen our investments in green hydrogen in Egypt. This is an example of just the kind of industry solutions that are required for translating the green transition into action. We value our strong cooperation with the Government of Egypt towards the green shift and the fight against climate change.”

Mike Scholey, CEO of Globeleq, said: “Bold and rapid collective action is required to put the world on a sustainable pathway.  Egypt is a key country for Globeleq, and we are excited to support the Government of Egypt’s ambitious green agenda and contribute to the fight against climate change.”

Waleid Gamal Eldien, Chairman of SCZONE, mentioned: “The new agreement with Globeleq is a continuation of our commitment to implement Egypt’s vision in the transformation for green economy. The Egyptian government has ambitious energy transition plans, in addition to hosting COP27, and active steps are being taken to make SCZONE a major hub for green hydrogen. We are pleased to partner with Globeleq, one of the major renewable energy companies in the UK and globally, and this partnership reflects the interest of the global entities specialised in investing in such projects as they choose SCZONE as a destination for investment in green fuel projects, to serve the African and international markets.”

Ayman Soliman, CEO of the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, commented: “The partnerships we are witnessing are a translation to the state’s integrated strategy to diversify energy sources and localise green hydrogen production with all its components covering upstream and downstream stages, with the aim of transforming Egypt into a regional green energy hub. Our objective is to maximize the use of Egypt’s renewable energy resources in partnership with global specialised developers, whereby the goals and strategy of The Sovereign Fund of Egypt are realised. We are glad to partner with Globeleq as one of the largest British international companies working in the field of new and renewable energy and infrastructure, with a special focus on energy projects in Africa, and has vast experience in working in Egypt.”

MOPH and WHO Collaborating to Create a Legacy for Sport and Health

With Qatar soon to take the center stage of world sports, the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) and World Health Organization (WHO) are driving forward efforts to help make this global celebration of football a beacon for health and safety, and a launchpad for sharing lessons with future mega sporting events. The partnership, which began last October, is supported by FIFA and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy and is part of a drive to promote health globally through football.

Her Excellency, Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari, Minister of Public Health, explained that the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ is a unique platform to promote health across the world and to communicate that sport and health go together. “Sport and health are intertwined, and together they play out in a celebration of joy, well-being, and solidarity for billions of people around the world.”

“The partnership on Sport for Health has two main focus areas. First, the partnership is working to help make the 2022 tournament – the first of its kind held in the Middle East – healthy and safe. Second, the partnership will capture all that was learned to share with our partners and organizers of other mega athletic events to channel the power of sport to help improve global public health and security,” added H.E Dr. Al Kuwari.

Her Excellency explained that by using the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™? to promote healthy lifestyles, people around the world can be inspired to play football and other sports. The partners are committed to delivering campaigns to raise awareness of the benefits of physical activity on health, as well as promoting the importance of following a healthy lifestyle through the adoption of healthy food choices during major sporting events.

In the same vein, she explained that at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, smoke-free stadiums and bans on tobacco marketing are among key protections offered to protect people from this deadly product. Benefits of these measures will help promote and protect the health of sports followers at future mega sporting events.

“Whether you are engaging in high-intensity workouts or even just simple regular activity, every effort counts towards a healthy body and a happy mind. To further promote healthy lives, we are underscoring the importance of nutrition by demonstrating the benefits of offering healthy food choices at mega sporting events,” said H.E Dr. Al Kuwari.

“As we all know, teamwork is essential for success in sports. The same is true for protecting and promoting health. We are committed to continue striving together, for this year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and beyond to leverage the global power of sport to help people lead the healthiest lives possible,” concluded H.E Dr. Al Kuwari.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, said that by focusing on physical activity, healthy diets and nutrition, tobacco control, mental health, and health security, the partnership strives to provide guidance on how to help improve the physical and mental health of all people globally through sports.

“The goals we’ve set our sights on are ambitious, so the foundation for our partnership must be solid and based upon three key pillars. These include health promotion through strategic collaboration with governments and sports stakeholders alike, reaching billions of people through football and other sports in order to promote healthy lives. Health security is also important and prioritizes putting safety and security at the center of all mega sporting events for the benefit of fans, players and staff. Finally, public health communications are critical, which means we must distill and amplify important information to the public in order to help them make healthy lifestyle choices,” added Dr. Ghebreyesus.

Under health promotion, the partnership is leveraging this year’s FIFA World Cup to promote the health benefits of simple physical activity for all through sport by developing new tools to reach people of all ages, particularly youth. The partners have been busy developing guidance and science through technical engagements in order to communicate the importance of physical activity.

One of the key findings is that good mental health can often be linked to regular physical activity, which includes sports or, again, simply walking and participating in physical activities with others. This can also help to promote a sense of inclusion and community.

“Lastly, keeping sporting events safe through a commitment to health security is a fundamental pillar of the Healthy World Cup project. From ensuring implementation of mass gathering protocols outside and inside stadiums, to adhering to control measures to protect people from infectious disease outbreaks at mega sporting events, we are committed to working with partners to ensure all necessary steps are taken to make mega sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup, safe and secure,” stated Dr. Ghebreyesus.

Since the partnership kicked off, MOPH and WHO have worked in close collaboration to promote physical health and well-being around several key milestones. These include promoting health and nutritional awareness during the Holy Month of Ramadan, engaging in the third edition of the “Walk the Talk: Health For All Challenge” in Geneva, and raising awareness of the harms caused by smoking on World No Tobacco Day.

Bellatrix
Paris

UAE assistance to Sudan .. A sustainable giving of high humanitarian solidarity value

The first flight of the UAE relief air bridge arrived today at Khartoum Airport, carrying 30 tonnes of various relief materials to relieve the brotherly Sudanese people affected by the torrential rains and floods that swept a number of Sudanese cities and states and caused great losses in lives and property.

The UAE relief air bridge is being operated in implementation of directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the follow-up of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), Mohammed Khamis Al Kaabi, head of the ERC delegation to Sudan, told the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that: “With the arrival of the first flight of the UAE relief air bridge, the UAE aid to the Sudanese floods-affected people signifies the depth of ties between the two brotherly countries, based on UAE’s deeply-rooted values and principles in stepping up the emergency humanitarian response and humanitarian solidarity with the brotherly peoples in light of the difficult circumstances they are going through, with the aim of alleviating the suffering of Sudanese families and improving their living conditions.” Al Kaabi added that the UAE has begun operating an air bridge to Khartoum to transport large quantities of relief aid and shelter materials for those affected by the torrential rains and floods.

According to him, the relief supplies include around 10,000 tents which will accommodate more than 50,000 affected and displaced families in most disaster-stricken states.

More flights of the relief air bridge to Khartoum will be operated in order to enhance the capacities of Sudanese concerned authorities and humanitarian organisations to contain the humanitarian repercussions.

Al Kaabi indicated that the UAE relief air bridge will be followed by three flights, which reflects the keenness of the UAE and its generous people to secure humanitarian support for the brotherly Sudanese people in any area where they face emergency disasters.

”The relief supplies include around 10,000 tents, 28,000 food parcels, 120 tonnes of various shelter materials, as well as urgent relief materials, which will help improve the living conditions of more than 140,000 affected people in the states of River Nile, Khartoum and Gezira,” he said.

Al Kaabi explained that the ERC delegation had visited the affected states to determine the extent of the damage, whether in lives, property and agricultural crops, as initial support had been provided from the local market to speed up the humanitarian response and distribute it to the beneficiaries through field work teams and experienced volunteers.

Al Kaabi further added that the ERC field teams will set up tents to shelter the affected people and provide a unique Emirati model in this field during the evacuation and housing process according to the highest standards of security and safety, in addition to the work of all teams to provide psychological support to the affected and various relief materials.

The UAE was among the first responders to the humanitarian situation in Sudan, when the wise leadership ordered the provision of AED 25 million of urgent humanitarian aid to those affected and displaced due to torrential rains and floods in Sudan, to help alleviate their suffering and improve their living conditions.

The directives of leadership to provide such assistance are an expression of the solidarity of the UAE and its people with the Sudanese people in such dire circumstances.
