Expo Stars League/ Al Gharafa Beat Al Rayyan in Week 7 Opener

Doha, Al Gharafa came from two goals down to defeat Al Rayyan 4-3 in Week 7 of the 2023-2024 season Expo Stars League at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium of Al Rayyan club on Saturday.

Yacine Brahimi scored a brace (44th minute penalty and 61st minute), while Yohan Boli (50th minute) and Farid Boulaya (90+5 minute) were also on target for the winners.

Al Rayyans goals were scored by Rodrigo Moreno (ninth minute), Achraf Bencharki (20th minute) and Rodrigo Tabata (86th minute).

With the result, Al Rayyan remained on 15 points, while Al Gharafa now have 16 points.

As expected, league leaders Al Rayyan were in attack mode right from the blast of the opening whistle, and as proof of their determination to register an early goal, forward Bencharki was shown a yellow card in the second minute of play for a foul on Al Gharafas Homam Al Ameen.

Seven minutes later, former Leeds United forward Moreno opened the scoring for Al Rayyan with a fine header from very close range to the high centre of the goal following a sublime corner kick from Bassam Al Rawi.

In the 20th minute, Bencharki registered his presence on the scorers sheet with a well-taken left-footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner to make it 2-0 for Al Rayyan.

With two goals down and defeat staring them in the face, Al Gharafa woke up to reality and the team seemed to be playing with more cohesion and determination. Boulaya saw his right-footed shot from the right side of the box that was aiming for the target blocked in the 22nd minute.

Al Gharafa continued to mount pressure in a bid to cut the deficit and their hard work paid off in the 41st minute when Al Rayyans Shogo Taniguchi conceded a penalty following a handball in their penalty area in the 41st minute, which Al Gharafas arrowhead in attack Brahimi wasted no time in converting with a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner in the 44th minute.

Yohan Boli scored his fourth goal of the season to restore parity for Al Gharafa in the 50th minute with a bouncing shot in the 18-yard box that deceived Al Rayyan goalkeeper Fahad Younes, as the ball seemed to be heading over the bar before somehow heading into the top right-hand corner, following an assist from Boulaya.

Brahimi got Al Gharafa ahead with his second of the night in the 61st minute after coolly finishing an overlapping run inside Al Rayyans 18-yard box from a well-timed pass by Ferjani Sassi to make it 3-2 for The Cheetahs.

Al Rayyans efforts for equaliser were rewarded in the 86th minute when Tabata wriggled his way away from Al Gharafas defence following a one-two pass between him and Moreno to poke in the ball past goalkeper Ababacar for the equaliser to the relief of their vociferous fans.

Boulaya scored the winner in stoppage time following a fast break that saw him outpace the Al Rayyan defence to fire home a shot that went between the legs of the goalkeeper.

Three minutes later, Moreno found the net with a fine header for what could have been Al Rayyans equaliser, following a throw-in, but after a VAR check, the goal was overturned and Al Gharafa ran away with the victory on the night.

Expo Stars League/ Al Duhail Overcome Al Shamal Hurdle, Advances to Fourth Place

Doha, Al Duhail scored an exciting 2-1 victory over Al Shamal in Week 7 of the 2023-2024 season Expo Stars League at the Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday.

All three goals came in the second half, courtesy of Yousef Ayman (63rd minute) and Almoez Ali (76th minute) for Al Duhail, while Ricardo Gomes scored a 90th-minute penalty for Al Shamal.

With the result, Al Duhail increased their tally to 13 points, while Al Shamal remained on three points from three draws.

The first attempt of the night fell to Al Shamals Gomes, but his right-footed shot from a difficult angle on the right, following an assist by Mahdi Salem, got blocked in the ninth minute.

Al Duhails Sultan Al Braik tried a through ball that was destined for Almoezs leg in the 35th minute, but the Qatar international was flagged offside for what could have been the opening goal.

Four minutes later, Almoez got a sublime pass across the way of Michael Olunga, but the Kenyan striker was also caught offside.

Gomes got his right-footed shot from the left side of the box blocked in the 43rd minute, again following an assist by Salem.

With opportunities far and few between on both sides, the match remained a goalless stalemate at half-time.

After a series of near misses, Al Duhail finally broke the deadlock a little after the hour mark with defender Aymans thumping header from the left side of the six-yard box, following Almoezs cross from a corner kick, finding the top right-hand corner of Al Shamal goalkeeper Abdullah El Radys goal.

Almoez made it two in the 76th minute by firing home a left-footed shot from the centre of the box straight down the centre of the goal.

Al Shamal got a foot back in the game in stoppage time following the retake of a penalty kick by Gomes after his first attempt was saved by goalkeeper Zakaria and the follow-ups were equally missed by the Al Shamal players.

However, goalkeeper Zakaria was adjudged to have got off his line before the first kick, allowing Gomes another chance to redeem himself, which he did not waste this time around. The initial foul for the penalty was conceded by Mohammed Muntari, who was ruled by VAR to have brought down Salem in the penalty area in the 84th minute.

Much as Al Shamal tried to restore parity in the dying minutes of injury time, Al Duhail remained resolute as they obtained the maximum points at the end of proceedings.

U.S. to add new nuclear bomb to cope with ‘rapidly evolving’ security landscape

Washington, The United States will pursue a modern variant of the B61 nuclear gravity bomb, a centerpiece of America’s nuclear stockpile, to respond to a “rapidly evolving” security environment, the Department of Defense said Friday.

The move to produce the variant, designated as the B61-13, comes as the U.S. is striving to manage its military preeminence globally.

“The decision to pursue this capability, which was undertaken in close collaboration with the NNSA, responds to the demands of a rapidly evolving security environment as described in the 2022 Nuclear Posture Review,” the Pentagon said in a press release.

The NNSA stands for the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration.

Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy John Plumb said that the announcement on the pursuit of the new variant is reflective of the growing threats from potential adversaries, Yonhap reported.

“The United States has a responsibility to continue to assess and field the capabilities we need to credibly deter and, if necessary, respond to strategic attacks, and assure our allies,” Plumb was quoted as saying in the release.

The B61-13 would be deliverable by modern aircraft, strengthening deterrence against adversaries and assurance for allies and partners by providing the U.S. president with additional options against certain harder and large-area military targets, the Pentagon said.

It would replace some of the B61-7s in the current nuclear stockpile and have a yield similar to the B61-7, which is higher than that of the B61-12.

The Pentagon claimed that the pursuit of the B61-13 is not in response to any specific current event.
