5.1-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Indonesia’s Papua


Papua: An earthquake measuring 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale struck on Thursday in Papua province in Indonesia.



According to Qatar News Agency, the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) said that the epicenter of the quake occurred at a distance of 20 km, east of Yapen islands in the province, at a depth of 10 km.



There have been no reports of casualties or material damage due to the earthquake so far.



Indonesia is regularly exposed to earthquakes, as it is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where many tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activity.
