5.1-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northern Chile

Doha: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck the Coquimbo region in northern Chile on Thursday. The US Geological Survey said in a statement that the earthquake occurred 66 km from the city of Offaly, at a depth of 27 km.

According to Qatar News Agency, no material damage or human losses have been reported. In 2010, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami struck central and southern Chile, killing 500 people.

Chile is subject to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its location along the Ring of Fire.
