5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Struck North Sumatra Province in Western Indonesia


Doha: An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck North Sumatra province in western Indonesia: The US Geological Survey stated in a report that the earthquake’s epicenter was located about 50 kilometers from the city of Sibolga at a depth of 52 kilometers. No immediate reports of material or human losses have been received.



According to Qatar News Agency, Indonesia regularly experiences earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where multiple tectonic plates meet, causing frequent volcanic and seismic activity.



In 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Sumatra, causing a tsunami that killed 220,000 people across the region.
