6.1-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Vanuatu Coast

Vanuatu: An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Vanuatu in the Pacific Ocean today.

According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 188.1 kilometers, 56 kilometers northeast of Port Olry. This region is no stranger to seismic activity due to its position within the South Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, where the convergence of tectonic plates often results in earthquakes and volcanic events.

Historically, Vanuatu has experienced significant earthquakes, including a destructive 7.4-magnitude earthquake in December 2024 that hit the capital, Port Vila. That event resulted in the tragic loss of 14 lives and caused extensive damage to commercial buildings, embassies, and a hospital.

Vanuatu is an archipelago of volcanic origin, making it prone to such seismic activities. The continuous monitoring of tectonic movements in this area is crucial for disaster preparedness and mitigation.
