Al-Baha, Nestled amidst the mountains of southwestern Saudi Arabia is a region adorned with a timeless natural treasure: the majestic juniper tree.

These evergreens, with their vibrant green hues, have graced the slopes and peaks of Al-Baha for centuries. Recent heavy rains have further accentuated their beauty, creating an attractive landscape primed to welcome summer visitors seeking a tranquil escape.

Muhammed bin Saeed Al-Qudwa, a representative of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification in Al-Baha, emphasized, in an interview with an SPA reporter, the significance of the juniper. According to him, roughly 30% of the region’s wild flora consists of juniper trees that thrive in Al-Baha, Baljurashi, Beni Hassan, and Al-Mandag governorates.

Al-Qudwa underscored the center’s dedication to protecting these precious forests. Yet, the center’s focus extends beyond junipers, encompassing tamarisk and acacia varieties as well.

The center’s endeavors align seamlessly w
ith Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which outlines a comprehensive national action plan for forests that incorporates various initiatives – afforestation projects, tree-care programs, and seed collection and dispersal – all undertaken in collaboration with various other sectors. The ultimate objective is to safeguard the region’s unique plant diversity, not only for its aesthetics, but also for its economic significance, particularly with regard to medicinal and aromatic plants.

The center prioritizes the security and preservation of forest sites. Rangers monitor vegetation and work to deter violations such as tree cutting or logging. They enforce penalties as stipulated by the law, with inspectors and observers playing a vital role in investigating and verifying offenses. Moreover, the center strives to raise public awareness, and encourages individuals to be responsible stewards of Al-Baha’s verdant tapestry.

This year’s heavy rainfall has revitalized the junipers. Their captivating fragrance and intertwined
branches now form a vast, inviting canopy of shade, further enhancing Al-Baha’s allure for nature lovers. The region’s charming atmosphere, particularly during the approaching summer season, promises a truly memorable escape.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, the enduring junipers have significant ecological benefits. They contribute to soil conservation, protect waterfalls and rainwater runoff systems, and are an important component of the region’s tourist appeal.

Al-Baha’s commitment to preserving its natural treasures is further evidenced by the opening of over 30 forests earlier this year. This initiative coincides with a surge in visitors, both domestic and international, drawn to the region’s moderate climate and the breathtaking scenery accentuated by the recent rains.

Local authorities are preparing parks, gardens, and heritage villages surrounding these forests, to ensure that visitors have a truly enriching and relaxing experience. These efforts solidify Al-Baha’s reputation as a premier tourist des
tination.
