The UAE is taking part in the consultative meeting of Arab foreign ministers and the ministerial level extraordinary meeting of the Arab League Council to discuss developments on the Renaissance Dam issue. The meetings will be held on Tuesday in Doha.
The UAE’s delegation to the meetings is led by Dr. Hamad Saeed Al Shamsi, UAE Ambassador to Egypt and permanent representative to the League of Arab States.

H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, received Simon Coveney, Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence.
During the meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Abdullah and Coveney discussed cooperation and friendship ties between the UAE and Ireland.
They also tackled ways to enhance relations in all fields in the best interest of the two peoples.
They reviewed a number of issues of mutual interest and the efforts of both countries in the fight against COVID-19 and the need to develop international collective action to ensure the delivery of vaccines against the virus to all countries which would contribute to accelerating the pace of recovery.
The two sides discussed the UAE’s hosting of the Expo 2020 Dubai, which will start in October 2021, and Ireland’s participation in it.
Sheikh Abdullah welcomed Coveney’s visit and emphasised the strong bilateral ties between the UAE and Ireland and keenness on developing them in all domains.

Cairo, Adel Abdulrahman Al Asoomi, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, congratulated the leadership and government of the United Arab Emirates on its election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2022-2023.
In a statement posted by the Emirates News Agency (WAM) today, Al Asoomi hailed the development as a culmination of the achievements of the United Arab Emirates under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and their continuous efforts to establish the pillars of security and stability in the region and unswerving support for Arab causes.
He expressed his strong belief in the ability of the UAE to contribute to solving the significant challenges facing the region, wishing the nation success in performing this task for the higher good of all Arab countries.

NEW YORK – The U.N. General Assembly voted Friday to give two-year terms on the powerful 15-nation Security Council to five countries.
Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates all ran unopposed for available seats in their regional groups, and each secured the necessary two-thirds majority required of the secret ballots cast.
They will begin their terms on Jan. 1, 2022.
The council deals with issues of international peace and security. It has the power to deploy peacekeepers to trouble spots and to sanction bad actors. New members bring different experiences, perspectives and national interests to the council and can subtly affect dynamics among its members.
The council currently has several Middle Eastern crises on its agenda, including the Israeli-Palestinian situation and conflicts in Libya, Syria and Yemen.
Richard Gowan, U.N. director for the International Crisis Group and a long-time U.N. watcher, says the United Arab Emirates may play a role in those areas and elsewhere.
“The UAE has a lot of influence not only in the Middle East but in the Horn of Africa, and other council members will hope the Emiratis will use their influence to help stabilize countries like Sudan and Ethiopia,” Gowan said.
Gowan notes that Albania is a country that has “seen the U.N. fail awfully in its region in the past.”
The U.N. failed to stop the Balkan war of the early 1990s, leading to NATO bombing in 1995. Then in 1999, Kosovo’s ethnic Albanians fought Serbs to gain independence.
“Albania’s main interest on the U.N. agenda is of course still Kosovo, but the Security Council only has very limited influence there now,” Gowan told VOA.
UAE Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh noted that the council’s work does not end when resolutions are adopted.
“The UAE will be part of the coalition that speaks to strengthen the results-oriented nature of the council as much as possible,” she said, adding that the council is most effective when it is united.
But in recent years, diverging views, particularly among its permanent members — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — have stymied action on urgent issues.
“The Security Council’s record on recent crises has been pathetic,” Louis Charbonneau, U.N. director at Human Rights Watch, told VOA.
“Whether it involves war crimes in Gaza, massive human rights abuses in Myanmar, or atrocities in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, the most you can usually expect is the occasional statement of concern — and that’s if you’re lucky,” he said.
The countries elected Friday will replace exiting members Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam on Jan. 1.
They will join the five other current non-permanent members: India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway, and the five veto-wielding permanent members: Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.

During the meeting, a number of issues of common interest between the two brotherly countries were highlighted.
Sheikh Thamer hailed the brotherly relations between the State of Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates and existing cooperation in various fields.

This came as the UAE top diplomat received the GCC chief at the Ministry’s HQ in Abu Dhabi, where Sheikh Abdullah stressed the UAE’s appreciation for the efforts made by Al-Hajraf to promote synergy and joint action between the nations of the region.
Sheikh Abdullah underlined the UAE’s keenness to deepen fraternal ties among the GCC states, and help meet the aspirations of the region’s peoples for further progress and prosperity.

Mahash Saeed Al Hameli, UAE Ambassador to South Africa and Non-Resident Ambassador to Lesotho, has met with Matšepo Ramakoae, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations of Lesotho, at the UAE Embassy in Pretoria.
Ramakoae congratulated Al Hameli on his appointment as a non-resident ambassador of the UAE to her country and wished him success in performing his duties, affirming her country’s readiness to provide all support to facilitate his tasks.
The UAE ambassador, in turn, emphasised the keenness of the UAE leadership to consolidate relations between the two countries, expressing his eagerness to expand horizons of cooperation across all fields to achieve the aspirations of the two friendly countries and peoples.

Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohamed Abdirizak has hailed the UAE’s efforts to support the Somali people in various humanitarian and development fields as well as in security, stability and development journey in the country.
This came when Abdirizak met with the UAE Ambassador to Somalia, Mohammed Ahmed Othman in Mogadishu.
During the meeting, the Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and Othman reviewed the distinguished relations and ways to boost them and develop cooperation between the UAE and Somalia.
They also tackled a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest.
Othman emphasised that the UAE will continue to support Somalia in all domains and support the process of establishing security, stability and development in the country.

They also reviewed issues of mutual interest, including developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and the importance of maintaining security and stability in the Middle East.
Sheikh Abdullah welcomed the visit of Dendias, stressing the distinguished relations between the UAE and Greece and their fruitful cooperation in various domains.
The meeting also touched on the ongoing cooperation between the two countries to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and to mitigate its fallouts. The two sides stressed the importance of stepping up global efforts to ensure delivery of COVID-19 vaccines to all countries of the world.
They praised the recent announcement on the establishment of a safe travel corridor between the UAE and Greece for fully vaccinated individuals, in addition to mutual recognition of vaccination certificates issued by health authorities in the two countries.
Sheikh Abdullah hosted a dinner banquet in honour of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece and his accompanying delegation.
Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, attended the meeting.
