Georgian Minister of Economy Seeks Stronger Economic Ties with Qatar, Proposes Bilateral Free Trade Agreement


Doha: HE First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Levan Davitashvili, has expressed Georgia’s intention to strengthen economic ties with Qatar, with plans to initiate negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement in the near future.



According to Qatar News Agency, HE Davitashvili, speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum 2025 in Doha, emphasized Georgia’s consistent participation in the forum, highlighting its significance as a global event that brings together decision-makers from various sectors. This marks Georgia’s fifth involvement in the forum, which has maintained its success despite international challenges.



HE Davitashvili noted the progress in the Qatar-Georgia economic relationship, citing two key agreements signed in 2022 focused on mutual investment protection and cooperation in economy, trade, and technology. These agreements are seen as foundational for future economic collaboration.



He underlined the significance of partnerships with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, mentioning efforts to build strategic alliances with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. These partnerships are viewed as essential due to the economic influence and investment opportunities offered by these nations.



In addition, HE Davitashvili acknowledged the advancements in Qatar’s economy, particularly in non-hydrocarbon sectors, and praised the country’s economic diversification strategies and the impact of its free zones in attracting foreign investment.



Concluding, HE Davitashvili highlighted Georgia’s strategic position as a gateway to the South Caucasus and Central Asia, offering potential for enhanced economic collaboration with Qatar across various sectors.
