Gypsum Ornamentation’s Role in Modern Architectural Expression Explored

Jakarta:According to Qatar News Agency, a lecture organized by the Ministry of Culture's Visual Arts Center delved into the significance of gypsum ornamentation in traditional architecture and its contemporary relevance. The speaker, Mohammed Saeed Al Bloushi, a cultural heritage expert at Qatar's Ministry of Culture, highlighted how these ornamental designs are integral to a building's original structure, influencing its spatial and visual dynamics.

Al Bloushi explained the adaptability of gypsum, a versatile material that artisans have historically transformed into complex artistic forms. These designs, often based on geometric patterns, use principles of repetition and symmetry, drawing parallels with modern computational design techniques.

He emphasized that architectural identity transcends specific motifs, arising from the interplay of materials, climate, and local craftsmanship. The lecture also noted the preservation challenges of gypsum ornamentation, which is vulnerable to environmental conditions.

Conclusively, Al Bloushi underscored the importance of using architectural heritage as a source of inspiration for contemporary artistic practices, focusing on the interaction of light, mass, and human scale.
