Japan Lowers Tsunami Warnings in Several Areas

Tokyo: The Japan Meteorological Agency lowered Wednesday its tsunami warnings for much of the country due to the Kamchatka earthquake in Russia's Far East, but maintained them for northern regions.

According to Qatar News Agency, the agency announced on its website that the warning level was downgraded to 'advisory' from Ibaraki Prefecture in central Japan to Wakayama Prefecture in the south. However, it confirmed that the previous warning level remains unchanged for the northern regions of the archipelago.

Japan, along with the Hawaiian Islands, parts of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, the west coasts of Canada and the United States up to the Mexican border, as well as the Philippines and Indonesia, had initially issued tsunami warnings for portions of their coastlines. These warnings were a precautionary measure due to the aftermath of the powerful 8.8-magnitude Kamchatka earthquake, urging residents to evacuate.
