Kahramaa Signs Agreement to Build Ras Abu Fontas Power & Water Facility


Doha: Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has signed a strategic agreement with QatarEnergy, Qatar Electricity and Water Company Q.P.S.C, and Sumitomo Corporation, representing a consortium with Luluah Sky Energy Holding Ltd, to enhance the country’s electricity and water production. The agreement involves the construction of the Ras Abu Fontas power and water facility, which will have a production capacity of 2400 Megawatts (MW) and 110 million gallons per day (MGD).



According to Qatar News Agency, the agreement also includes the purchase of power and water from the facility, which is expected to supply approximately 23% of Qatar’s total power and 20% of its water production. The facility will be constructed at a cost of QAR 13.5 billion. This initiative is part of Kahramaa’s ongoing efforts to bolster supply security and promote sustainability within the electricity and water sectors, aligning with Qatar National Vision 2030.



The Ras Abu Fontas facility will address the increasing demand for energy and water, driven by Qatar’s rapid population and economic growth. It will also improve the efficiency of the national grid and support the integration of renewable energy sources, showcasing Qatar’s commitment to developing a modern and sustainable energy infrastructure.



The signing ceremony was attended by notable figures, including HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, President of Kahramaa, Abdulla Bin Ali Al-Theyab, Managing Director and CEO of Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC), Mohammad Nasser Al-Hajri, and General Manager, Overseas Energy Solution Strategic Business Unit of Sumitomo Corporation, Jun Minase.



The agreement outlines a three-phase commissioning plan for the facility, contributing significantly to the nation’s power and water supply. The first power date is set for April 25, 2028, with 836 MW of power coming online, and the final water date is scheduled for August 1, 2028, to achieve a water capacity of 110 MGD. Full operations are anticipated by June 1, 2029, with a total power capacity of 2400 MW.



HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, stated that the agreement marks a crucial milestone in efforts to achieve a comprehensive transformation in energy and water production by adopting advanced technologies and sustainable solutions. This aligns with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030, focusing on environmental sustainability, enhancing water security, and reducing environmental impact.



President of Kahramaa, Abdulla Bin Ali Al-Theyab, emphasized the importance of the agreement in realizing the vision for sustainability and innovation. He highlighted the commitment to developing pioneering solutions that support economic growth and improve quality of life in alignment with global objectives.



Managing Director and CEO of QEWC, Mohammad Nasser Al-Hajri, expressed pride in collaborating with Kahramaa to develop the project, reflecting a commitment to reliable energy and water solutions for the nation. Jun Minase of Sumitomo Corporation noted that the project aligns with the company’s goals for stable power and water supplies, supporting Qatar’s sustainable growth.



The project aims to enhance water and energy security, reduce environmental impact, support economic development, and promote innovation and technology development. It also focuses on long-term sustainability by building an integrated, efficient system.



Looking forward, the project company, in collaboration with Kahramaa, has a strategic plan to advance decarbonization within the next 15 years, aligning with Qatar’s National Vision 2030.
