Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Strikes Off East Coast of Taiwan

Taipei: An earthquake measuring magnitude 5.9 on the Richter scale struck on Monday off the east coast of Taiwan. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration reported that the epicenter of the quake was located about 30 kilometers from the coast, at a depth of 6.6 kilometers.

According to Qatar News Agency, some buildings in Taipei shook briefly, but there have been no reports of damage so far. Taiwan is located near the intersection of two tectonic plates, making it subjected to earthquakes.

More than 100 people were killed in an earthquake that struck southern Taiwan in 2016, and more than 2,000 were killed in a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in 1999.
