Ministry of Transport Launches Qatar Public Transport Master Plan

Doha: The Ministry of Transport has initiated the development of the Qatar Public Transport Master Plan (QPTMP), a strategic endeavor aimed at enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of Qatar's public transportation system. This plan seeks to balance the nation's rapid urban development with a commitment to sustainability, ultimately fostering a more efficient and future-ready transit network.

According to Qatar News Agency, the QPTMP is focused on improving accessibility, increasing service reliability, and exploring innovative mobility solutions aligned with the latest advancements. The plan aims to strategically guide the evolution of the public transit system, addressing challenges such as increased vehicular dependency, congestion, and environmental impact. It will assess current traffic congestion levels for both private and public vehicles, as well as carbon emissions, to propose effective solutions.

A key priority of the QPTMP is to leverage advanced, efficient, and sustainable public transportation solutions. This includes the implementation of electric transport systems designed to reduce carbon emissions and enhance climate quality, aligning with the Qatar National Vision 2030's environmental development goals. The plan aims to serve a broad audience, including policymakers, government officials, developers, and planners, by providing actionable frameworks and guidelines for effective transit planning and operation.

The QPTMP will also introduce prescriptive policies, laws, and regulations, supported by a comprehensive monitoring program to deliver integrated transportation solutions. This initiative aligns with the ministry's commitment to achieving the objectives of the National Development Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030.

The plan is expected to generate expansive societal and environmental benefits, contributing to healthier lifestyles, economic vitality, and a reduced ecological footprint through smarter transit solutions. The ministry emphasizes the importance of public participation and will conduct surveys from April to August 2025 to gather data on mobility preferences. These surveys will be carried out at metro, tram, and bus stations, as well as public markets and shopping malls, ensuring privacy and confidentiality in data handling.

The Ministry of Transport encourages public cooperation in these surveys to ensure accurate data collection, which will be vital for understanding and meeting the transportation needs of the community.
