Doha: The State of Qatar and the Republic of India enjoy a long-standing relationship characterized by strategic partnerships, mutual trust, and fruitful cooperation. Both nations are committed to enhancing these ties to meet the aspirations of their peoples. At a pivotal moment in this relationship, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani is paying a visit to India to engage in discussions aimed at further strengthening bilateral relations.
According to Qatar News Agency, during his visit, HH the Amir will meet with India's President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other senior Indian officials. The discussions will focus on enhancing bilateral relations and exploring avenues for cooperation in various sectors, including renewable energy, financial technology, and artificial intelligence. The talks also aim to address regional and international issues of mutual concern.
The diplomatic relationship between Qatar and India, established in the early 1970s, recently marked its 50th anniversary. Over the decades, it has grown to encompass political communication, energy cooperation, and cultural exchanges. A significant milestone was reached in March 2015 when HH the Amir's visit to India paved the way for a new phase in the bilateral relationship, resulting in several agreements and a joint statement highlighting mutual satisfaction with the relationship's current state.
Both countries have established effective institutional mechanisms in areas such as trade, investment, energy, and defense. They have agreed to form a high-level strategic committee to coordinate cooperation on regional and global issues and to increase high-level bilateral visits. The aim is to strengthen people-to-people ties and build a strong partnership for peace, stability, and security.
Previous visits by HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have further solidified these ties. Discussions during these visits have covered a range of issues, including economic and energy cooperation and trade.
Economically, India is Qatar's second-largest trading partner, with a significant presence of Indian SMEs in Qatar. The trade exchange between the two countries has averaged USD16 billion annually, with Qatari energy exports playing a crucial role in India's energy security. Recent milestones in their energy partnership highlight the continued collaboration in this vital sector.
Efforts to enhance commercial ties saw the first meeting of the joint trade working group in Doha last year, focusing on collaboration in sectors such as industry, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. Qatar's participation in international forums and conferences underscores its commitment to attracting foreign investments and expanding commercial partnerships with India.
The robust relationship is further supported by agreements and memoranda of understanding in various sectors, including defense, labor, education, and tourism. India's strategic location and economic potential continue to attract significant foreign investment, reinforcing the importance of its partnership with Qatar.
