Qatar Commits to Global Energy Security Amid Regional Tensions

New york: The State of Qatar has reinforced its commitment to maintaining its role as a reliable and responsible partner in promoting global energy security. As one of the leading exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) worldwide, Qatar has consistently supplied stable and reliable LNG to various countries across Asia, Europe, and beyond, thereby contributing to the stability of international energy markets.

According to Qatar News Agency, this commitment was highlighted by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, during a special meeting of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on "Safeguarding energy and supply flows: Supporting global development through international cooperation" at the UN headquarters. Sheikha Alya Al-Thani discussed the challenges faced by Qatar due to missile attacks from the Islamic Republic of Iran, which notably impacted the Ras Laffan Industrial City, home to the world's largest LNG facility, and led to a "force majeure" status in production.

Sheikha Alya Al-Thani warned that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz could escalate the crisis from a regional concern to a global one, causing sharp price fluctuations, impacts on shipping and trade, and increased transportation and production costs. Given the strait's significance as a vital passageway for oil, LNG, and global trade, Qatar emphasized the necessity of keeping international maritime routes open and safe in line with international law and Security Council resolutions.

Qatar remains dedicated to collaborating with the international community, the UN, and partners to safeguard the security and sustainability of energy flows and support global development efforts.
