Qatar Reaffirms Support for Global Counter-Terrorism Efforts

New York:Qatar has reiterated its commitment to supporting international counter-terrorism measures and enhancing multilateral cooperation to address emerging threats and promote global peace and security.

According to Qatar News Agency, Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, Mohammed Khalifa Al Nasr, delivered this statement during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly's Sixth Committee, which focused on "Measures to Eliminate International Terrorism." Al Nasr emphasized the necessity of ongoing consultations to further develop international law in combating terrorism.

Al Nasr condemned terrorism in all forms, regardless of its motivations, and rejected attempts to associate terrorism with any religion, culture, or people. He highlighted the need for a collective commitment to international law, human rights, and avoiding selectivity or politicization in counter-terrorism efforts. Additionally, he warned against using anti-terrorism measures as a pretext for violating rights or discriminating against peoples under occupation.

Qatar welcomed the UN General Assembly's recent resolution on the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and reaffirmed its dedication to implementing its provisions and principles. Al Nasr also stressed the importance of completing the international legal framework for counter-terrorism and called for consensus on a draft Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.

Al Nasr described Qatar's comprehensive approach to counter-terrorism, which includes national legislation, capacity-building, and international cooperation. Qatar has strengthened its legislative framework, particularly in combating terrorist financing, and adopted a national strategy aligned with the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, focusing on prevention, protection, prosecution, and recovery.

Internationally, Qatar is a key partner of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism and the largest contributor to the UN Trust Fund for Counter-Terrorism since 2019. Qatar's contributions have enabled the implementation of significant projects under the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

Qatar hosts one of the five UNOCT programme offices, with plans to expand the Doha office to enhance capacity-building assistance. Qatar also collaborates with other entities involved in the UN counter-terrorism mandate and plays an active role in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, supporting regional efforts within the League of Arab States and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
