Qatari-Lebanese Relations: A Model of Bilateral Cooperation and Continuous Support

Doha: The State of Qatar and the Republic of Lebanon have maintained robust historical relations, showcasing a model of bilateral Arab cooperation grounded in mutual respect and unwavering support. Qatar has consistently stood by Lebanon during its crises, providing critical political, economic, and humanitarian assistance, particularly during pivotal moments in Lebanon's history.

According to Qatar News Agency, Qatar has played a significant role in supporting Lebanon's stability through diplomatic initiatives aimed at fostering dialogue and providing relief and development aid to address the crises Lebanon has faced. Qatar's steadfast support is highly valued by both the Lebanese public and government, particularly its commitment to supporting Lebanon's liberation efforts and advocating for its causes in international forums.

The expression "Thank you, Qatar" is widely acknowledged in Lebanon, symbolizing the appreciation for Qatar's assistance in mitigating Lebanon's political, economic, and security challenges, as well as supporting reform and reconstruction efforts. The Lebanese recognize the importance of strengthening relations between the two countries through reciprocal visits and collaborations between officials.

In this context, the official visit of HE Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun to Doha is particularly significant, as it further solidifies the cooperation between the two nations. Qatar's contributions have been pivotal during Lebanon's political crises, including hosting the Lebanese National Dialogue Conference in May 2008, which resulted in the Doha Agreement, ending an 18-month political deadlock.

Qatar has also been instrumental in addressing Lebanon's presidential vacancy crisis, which began after President Michel Aoun's term ended in October 2022 and concluded with the election of President Joseph Aoun in January 2025. Qatar's involvement in the diplomatic efforts to facilitate consensus among Lebanese parties was crucial in resolving this issue.

During the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit in Beirut in January 2019, HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani's presence demonstrated Qatar's dedication to Arab solidarity and support for Lebanon's economic and social stability. Qatar's stance during the recent Israeli aggression against Lebanon and the Gaza Strip further emphasized its commitment to justice and fairness.

Qatar's mediation efforts led to a ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel on November 27, 2024. Additionally, Qatar has significantly contributed to Lebanon's economic recovery, providing essential aid and support through initiatives such as a humanitarian airlift delivering over 150 tons of medical and food supplies during the recent Israeli aggression in 2024.

The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has also played an important role, offering aid to Lebanon's military and supporting essential services like Karantina Hospital following the 2020 Beirut port explosion. Qatar's funding of a $25 million project to revitalize the Lebanese National Library in 2018 and a memorandum of understanding for scholarships to Lebanese students in 2021 further underscore its commitment to Lebanon's development.
