Romania Reports Drone Downing After Airspace Violation

Romania: Romania's Defense Ministry announced on Saturday that a NATO mission fighter jet successfully shot down a drone that breached Romanian airspace.

According to Qatar News Agency, the ministry's statement detailed that an F-18 fighter involved in the NATO mission intercepted and eliminated the drone. While the specific origin of the aircraft is under investigation, initial assessments suggest it may be Russian. The ministry noted that Romanian radar systems detected the drone entering from Moldova, approximately 24 km north of Galati, a city in southeastern Romania.

This incident follows Romania's previous actions in July when it downed three drones suspected to be Russian after they entered its airspace. Earlier, in May, a drone crash in Galati resulted in injuries to two individuals. As a NATO member, Romania, which shares a 614-km border with Ukraine, has experienced repeated airspace intrusions by drones thought to be Russian over the past four years.
