New york: The Security Council has decided to extend the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for an additional year, pushing its tenure to October 31, 2026. This decision aims to continue efforts towards stabilizing the country and facilitating the long-awaited presidential and parliamentary elections.
According to Qatar News Agency, since August, UNSMIL has been focused on crafting a 12- to 18-month roadmap to guide Libya towards these national elections. However, the mission recently missed its first major deadline, which was set for October.
The roadmap outlined initial tasks to be completed within the first two months, including restructuring Libya's high national elections commission, reaching an agreement between the House of Representatives and the State Council on electoral laws, and starting the process to form a unified government. These steps are seen as crucial in moving forward with the electoral process and ensuring political stability in the region.
