Mogadishu: Somalia's army reported the successful elimination of 29 Al Shabab fighters during a military operation in the country's central region. The Somali National Army announced that the operation targeted militant positions in the Jubad Gudni area of the Middle Shabelle region, which is situated southeast of the capital, Mogadishu.
According to Qatar News Agency, the army's statement, released on Thursday, highlighted that the operation resulted in the deaths of senior commanders and key operatives of the militant group. The operation was conducted in coordination with international partners and is part of a broader campaign that has been ongoing over the past week. This campaign has also targeted the areas of Alnali and Hawadley, leading to the deaths of approximately 135 Al Shabab fighters and the destruction of several of their bases.
Al Shabab, an organization associated with Al Qaeda, has been engaged in conflict with the Somali government for over ten years. In recent times, Somali security forces have intensified their offensive against the group, successfully recapturing numerous towns and villages in the central and southern regions of the country.
