Mogadishu: Somali authorities announced Monday the killing of 100 militants in a military operation by the Somali army in the south of the country.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Somali National News Agency (SONNA) reported that the Danab forces of the National Army, in cooperation with international partners, conducted a military operation against militants in the Awdhegle district of Lower Shabelle region. The operation resulted in the killing of 100 militants and the destruction of trenches and shelters where they were hiding.
For nearly two decades, Somali government forces have been engaged in combat with armed movements, most notably the Al Shabaab movement, which has links to Al Qaeda. Al Shabaab has been responsible for numerous attacks that have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians and security personnel. Additionally, the group frequently targets government facilities and hotels in the capital, Mogadishu.
