Doha: Spaniard Raul Fernandez won the British Grand Prix-Qatar Airways, the 12th round of the MotoGP World Championship at Silverstone Circuit on Sunday, securing the second victory of his career. The Trackhouse-Aprilia rider crossed the finish line first in 39 minutes, 45.930 seconds, 2.538 seconds ahead of compatriot Jorge Martin of Aprilia, who leads the overall championship standings. Italy's Marco Bezzecchi, also riding for Aprilia, finished third, 3.393 seconds behind the winner.
According to Qatar News Agency, Fernandez led all 20 laps of the race at Silverstone from start to finish, capitalizing on a poor start by pole-sitter Martin, who encountered a mechanical problem after sparks were seen coming from the rear of his bike. Fernandez became the 12th different rider to win in the last 12 MotoGP races held at the iconic Silverstone circuit, which also hosts the British Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Despite finishing second in the main race, Martin, the 2024 world champion and winner of the Silverstone Sprint, extended his lead in the championship standings to 31 points over his closest rival and Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi. Martin now has 240 points. Japan's Ai Ogura of Trackhouse-Aprilia, who started the race from second on the grid, crashed midway through the race, dropping from second to third in the overall championship standings with 203 points, 37 behind Martin.
Spain's Alex Marquez of Gresini Ducati sits fourth in the championship standings with 200 points, just one point ahead of compatriot Pedro Acosta of KTM and Italy's Fabio Di Giannantonio of Ducati's VR46 team. Reigning world champion Marc Marquez of the factory Ducati team currently sits seventh in the overall standings.
