UK to Implement Extensive Sanctions Against Russia Amid War Anniversary

London: The United Kingdom will reveal a significant package of sanctions against Russia on Monday, coinciding with the three-year mark since the onset of the war in Ukraine, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced on Sunday.

According to Qatar News Agency, Lammy emphasized the timing of the sanctions, stating, “This is also the time to turn the screws on Putin’s Russia. Tomorrow, I plan to announce the largest package of sanctions against Russia since the early days of the war – eroding their military machine and reducing revenues fuelling the fires of destruction in Ukraine.”

The new sanctions package set to be adopted by the European Union includes a ban on imports of Russian aluminum. Lammy highlighted the broader geopolitical implications, saying, “This is a critical moment in the history of Ukraine, Britain and all of Europe… Now is the time for Europe to double down on our support for Ukraine.”

Furthermore, Lammy reaffirmed the UK’s military commitment, pledging 3 billion pounds annually to Kyiv and expressing readiness to provide UK troops as part of peacekeeping forces if necessary. He stated, “We will work with the US and European partners to achieve a sustainable, just peace, and in doing so, remaining clear that there can be nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.”

In related developments, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is anticipated to travel to Washington for discussions with US President Donald Trump, who has recently intensified his criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
