UN Urges Safeguarding ICC’s Independence

Doha: The United Nations called for allowing the International Criminal Court (ICC) to operate with full independence.

According to Qatar News Agency, commenting on US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose sanctions on the ICC, Deputy Spokesman for UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, stressed in a press conference that the court plays a crucial role in the global fight against impunity, stating that the ICC must be allowed to carry out its work independently.

He added that they expect the host country, United States, to take the necessary steps regarding individuals in accordance with the UN Headquarters Agreement, emphasizing that the agreement places certain obligations on the host country, which Washington is expected to uphold.

On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order imposing sanctions on the ICC, barring its officials, employees, and members as well as their relatives from entering the United States.
